Citizenship award winners plan higher education

County councillors congratulate student award winners during the May 21 council meeting. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship.

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – All six high school students receiving the 2025 Mountain View County (MVC) Citizenship Award say they plan to pursue higher eduction following high school graduation.

The award recognizes the contributions made by the students to their respective communities. The students were officially recognized by council during the recent council meeting.

Applicants are judged on various criteria, including leadership qualities, volunteer work, and maintaining a good academic standing. Award recipients each receive $1,000 under Policy No. 8002 - Citizenship Award.

Brooke Anderson is graduating from Cremona School and will be attending the University of Calgary to take a degree in chemistry. 

Jayna Kirke is graduating from Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs and is  conditionally accepted to the University of Calgary where she plans to take a degree in psychology.

Courtney Sewell is graduating from Olds Koinonia Christian School and she plans to pursue a teaching career.

Julie Dunn is graduating from Olds High School and will be attending the University of Alberta for a degree in kinesiology.

Hailey Israelson is graduating from Didsbury High School and plans to attend the University of Saskatchewan for a degree in agricultural science.

Sam Botheras is graduating from Sundre High School and plans to attend Mount Royal University for a degree in communication.

Shelley French, head of communication with MVC, says the county “sends information about the Citizenship Awards to all schools, which are responsible for promoting the program internally. Each school then submits their top three applicants for council's review and final decision on the award recipient.”

In presenting the awards during the May 21 council meeting, reeve Angela Aalbers said,  “We are so excited to have such amazing great youth in our community and we sure hope that some of those youth at some stage will want to sit in one of these seats and really lead your community from an elected officials position.”
