BOWDEN — In case anyone is wondering, the for sale sign at the site of the former Bowden Hotel was not put up by the Town of Bowden, but by the provincial government, mayor Robb Stuart says.

“The Town (of Bowden) could have bought it, but it had to be for municipal purposes only, and we didn't need another park or anything down there, so we declined to purchase,” he said during an interview with the Albertan.

“Of course, people say, Why didn't we buy the land to put a grocery store there? Well, even if we could have enticed somebody to build a grocery store there, we couldn't have bought the land, because that's not part of the package the province offers,” he said.

The Reddi Mart, a convenience store and gas station in downtown Bowden closed on Jan. 31 this year. Owner/operator Patty Houchin said that decision was made because Parkland Corporation would not renew the lease.

The province has listed the 9,360 square-foot property at 1919 20 Avenue for sale for $75,000.
