Funnel clouds, torrential rain possible in Red Deer County Wednesday

RED DEER COUNTY -  Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Red Deer County and nearby urban centres Wednesday.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and torrential rain,” the federal agency’s 10:37 a.m.weather alert for the area said. “Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and torrential rain under slow moving storms. Funnel clouds are also possible.”

Conditions will improve this evening, the weather alert said.

A watch is issued when conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms with one or more of the following conditions:

• Wind gusts of 90 kilometres an hour (km/h) or greater, which could cause structural wind damage;

• Hail of 2.5 centimetres (cm) or larger in diameter; or

• Heavy rainfall

Included in the watch are:

• Red Deer County near Innisfail, Bowden, Penhold, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Pine Lake. Spruce View , Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

Mountain View County is not included in the watch.
