Smoke Show & Shine in Olds draws fewer entries

About 75 vehicles were on display, down from around 100 in previous years

OLDS — Cam Clark Ford in Olds held its fifth annual Smoke Smoke Show: Show & Shine, on Aug. 2.

Kent Vaniderstine’s 1968 Mustang was named Best in Show. Jennifer Tschritter won Best Car for her Ford Shelby GT-500. Kevin Williamson of Carstairs received the Best Pickup/SUV for his 1965 Mercury M100 Short Box pickup.

Seventy-three vehicles were registered, Cam Clark Ford general manager Justin Menard said in an email. That’s down from previous years when at least once, around 100 vehicles were registered.

Menard said that’s likely because some vehicle owners were concerned about early morning thunderstorms that occurred and forecasts calling for a good probability of rain that day.

“A lot of people put so much time and energy and also money into customizing their vehicles. And especially in Alberta, we get lots of hail and weather that can damage those vehicles,” Menard said during an interview with the Albertan.

Money from this year’s event was slated to go to the Rural Alberta Motorcycle Ride For Dad, which raises money for research and awareness about prostate cancer. Menard says $2,600 was raised for the cause.

“Obviously, you know, we have lots of charities that reach out and we felt that it was one that we hadn't supported in the past with a cause that's close to a lot of people in the car community,” Menard said during an interview.

“Prostate cancer affects one in eight men and we thought it was a great opportunity to create some awareness for them.”

There was a steady stream of vehicle enthusiasts throughout the day. That pleased Menard.

“When we have nice weather, there's a ton of people from the community that might not have a vehicle to enter, but they still come in and they still support the cause, check out the cars,” he said.

“Obviously, anyone that owns a car loves to explain what they've done to their vehicle or the story behind it. It's a great, great community event to be able to host here at Camp Clark Ford.”
