Fewer participants in Olds' 2025 Hike for Hospice but Didsbury's about the same

Society’s decision to support clients who request MAiD likely a major factor in lower turnout, executive director says

The family of Raymond Dodd, currently in hospice, were among those who participated in this year's Hike for Hospice.

OLDS — Fewer people participated in the Mountain View Hospice Society’s (MVHS) annual Hike for Hospice in Olds and Didsbury on Sunday, May 4 but it is still expected to raise close to its $22,000 target, executive director Mary Marshall says.

Marshall says “a small but mighty” contingent of 80 people took part in Olds and about 20 participated in the hike in Didsbury. She said normally more than 100 people participate in Olds and about 15 to 20 do so in Didsbury.

“While our numbers were down, the energy on the ground was anything but — connection, compassion, and community spirit were felt in every step,” Marshall wrote in an email.

Marshall said while a rainy forecast might have kept a couple of people away, she figures tough economy and a decision by the MVHS to accept clients who wish to receive Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) were the biggest factors.

“In today’s uncertain economic climate, marked by rising costs, new tariffs, and a changing federal landscape, we know that many organizations and individuals are facing hard decisions,” Marshall wrote.

“Like others, we too have felt the impact.

“We also recognize that our choice to support clients who request Medical Assistance in Dying within our hospice suites may not align with everyone’s beliefs.

“As an organization rooted in dignity and compassion, we respect each individual's right to choose how they live and how they die.

“It is not our place to judge, but rather to walk alongside those we serve with empathy and integrity. Our focus remains on providing exceptional palliative care and compassionate support to all we serve.”

Meanwhile, more local businesses came on board to support the hike this year.

“With additional donations still coming in, we are projected to raise close to $22,000; just shy of our goal, but a powerful result in a tough year," Marshall wrote.

“A special congratulations goes out to Jim Stone & Friends, who raised over $4,000, making them our top individual fundraising team,” she added.

Because the hike took place on May 4, it had a Star Wars theme, referencing the famous Star Wars phrase “may the force be with you.”
