MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Water Valley netminder Kayden Juneau backstopped his team to a gold medal at the recent Alberta Prospects Cup hockey tournament in Red Deer.
Juneau, 12, was one of 16 goalies and 160 athletes, all from Alberta, selected to compete in the May 8-11 tournament.
His South Gold team defeated the South Black team in the final on May 11, winning 3-2.
The U-13 tournament was played at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.
All players on the eight teams in the tournament were born in 2012.
A Grade 7 student at Cremona School, Juneau has been playing hockey since age 3 and goalie since age 7.
“It was fun making lots of new friends and learning different playing styles,” he told the Albertan. “It was a great experience.”
Asked if he has a professional goalie he looks up to, Kayden said – without hesitation – Montreal Canadien Carey Price and New Jersey Devils Martin Brodeur.
Juneau is also playing AA baseball in Olds this spring.
“He’s a busy kid,” said his mother Mary.
