MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – The wildfire burning northwest of Sundre in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area since Saturday has been brought under control, provincial officials report.
As of the morning of Wednesday, May 7 RWF030 was listed as under control, meaning the wildfire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread.
It was listed as being held at 28 hectares (69.2 acres) a day previous.
Located west of Range Road 61 and north of Township Road 334 near the TAQA gas plant in Mountain View County, the wildfire was first reported to the Sundre Fire Department on May 3 at 12:24 p.m.
Alberta Wildfire and the Sundre Fire Department were assisted by crews and equipment from Olds and Clearwater County.
Water bombers and fire retardant dropped from the air helped to contain the wildfire after about seven hours, a Sundre Fire Department official said. Bulldozers and a track hoe were deployed to create a fire break.
By 10:45 p.m. Saturday night, the wildfire was classified as being held, meaning it was not expected to grow beyond its existing boundaries.
No property or livestock were lost, according to the Sundre official.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Parts of Mountain View County are included in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, namely west of Sundre and Bergen, covering Coal Camp and Bearberry west of Range Road 60 from Township Road 312 to the north boundary of the county.
The forest protection area is under a fire restriction as is the rest of the Mountain View County.
Since January 1, 2025 there have been 30 wildfires in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, burning a total of 117.53 hectares.
