Olds RCMP seize illegal cigarettes during traffic stop

A 37-year-old man from Spruce Grove faces charges relating to frauds upon government and possession of untaxed tobacco

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – A 37-year-old man is facing charges after police reportedly seized $60,000 worth of illegal cigarettes during a traffic stop on Highway 2, police said in a release issued Monday.

At about 9 a.m. on June 8, Olds RCMP received a call about an erratic driver southbound on the highway.

“Information was received that the vehicle was travelling over 150 kilometres per hour and almost sideswiped another vehicle, passed unsafely and veered into other lanes of travel,” said RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney.

Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

“Officers observed illegal cigarettes in plain view during the traffic stop,” she said.

A Spruce Grove man, who has not yet been named, has been charged with frauds upon government and possession of untaxed tobacco.

He has been released on a notice to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on Aug. 25.

Olds RCMP detachment commander Sgt. Jamie Day said, “Olds RCMP would like to thank Didsbury RCMP for their assistance during this investigation.”
