A total of 56 teams took to the ice at the Olds Curling Club last week for the Olds Farmers and Farmerettes Bonspiel for five days of friendly competition, Feb. 14 to 18.

The Olds Bantam Chiefs qualified for the provincial championships on Feb. 12 with a 3-2 victory over Cochrane. The Chiefs will now represent Zone 6 at the championships, which will be held March 22 to 25 in Lacombe.

The Olds Midget Mustangs clinched a berth at the provincial midget championships on Wednesday with a convincing 9-1 victory over Cochrane. The Mustangs won the two-game, total goal series 13-2 to clinch the berth.

The Olds College Broncos varsity men's basketball team exploded on Wednesday for 143 points against the Prairie Bible Institute Pilots, managing an 85-point victory at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The Olds Grizzlys finished up their 2011-12 Alberta Junior Hockey League regular season home schedule on Feb. 8 with a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Canucks.

Olds residents Maeghan Wild and Lauren Roblee returned from the Alberta Winter Games in Spruce Grove on the weekend with positive results.

The Olds College women's Broncos varsity basketball team continued to show their dominance on the hardcourt last week with two victories, giving them a perfect 9-0 record to lead Pool A of the Alberta Colleges Athletic League standings.

Although final numbers aren't yet in, the Olds Grizzlys held a successful casino fundraiser on Feb. 4. Attendance numbers were “down from last year, but … it went over quite well,” said Tammy Moritz, business manager for the Grizzlys.

A total of nine skaters from the Olds Figure Skating Club competed in Carstairs Jan. 27 to 29 at ICE FEST, bringing home 10 medals from the competition.

The Olds Grizzlys lost a pair of tight games in Alberta Junior Hockey League action last week, dropping a 3-2 decision on Friday to the Canmore Eagles and a 2-1 contest to the Drumheller Dragons on Jan. 30 at the Olds Sports Complex.
