Olds Grizzlys head coach Joe Murphy says it's too early to know what effect a leave of absence by the Calgary Mustangs will have on his club.

With spring here, minor sports are kicking off in Olds and the Albertan has gotten insight into several of the changes they face. “This year we have more participants than we have had in several years with 340 registrations.

CARSTAIRS -- Carstairs Minor Hockey Association (CMHA) recently held its annual awards banquet at the community hall.

The Sportsplex will be home to a lacrosse tripleheader this Saturday, May 11. It starts when the Mavericks hold their home-opener at 2:30 p.m. versus the Regina Barracudas. Then at 5 p.m., the new senior C Stingers will host the Airdrie Mohawks.

Baseball leagues around Alberta are well underway including those here in Mountain View County.

An Olds youth was drafted during the Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft in Red Deer May 2. Avery Trotter, a defenceman, was drafted in the fifth round, 103rd overall, by the Spokane Chiefs. He stands 6-1 and weighs 163 pounds.

The Sundre Soccer Club’s season is off to a good start, although the recent weather has somewhat hampered play.

The Olds Bantam and Midget Stingers lacrosse teams both won gold during a tournament in High River April 26-28. Both teams won all three preliminary games, thereby earning berths in the finals.
