OLDS — The Olds Pickleball Club’s spring tournament attracted about twice as many participants as last year and a local guy was one of the two champions.

Mary Wilson of the club says 44 people participated in the tournament, held April 19 at the Community Learning Campus gym. In an email, Wilson said last year, about 20 people participated.

The tournament was split into two competitive divisions: intermediate and advanced.

In the end, Jaco Hoffman of Olds won the advanced division and Suzanne Hicks of Red Deer won intermediate division.

Wilson described it as “a very successful tournament.”

“Everyone registered as an individual and played with different partners throughout the day,” she wrote. “Everyone played 15 games and the four finalists in each division played an additional three games.”

The finalists in the intermediate division were James Hamilton, Olds; Greg Weins, Mountain View County; Steven Ruppert, Innisfail; and Suzanne Hicks, Red Deer.

The finalists in the advanced division were Jaco Hoffman and Jerry Prescott of Olds; Jim Cowitz, Canmore; and Ron Anderson, Strathmore.

Tournament entrants came from Sundre, Olds, Innisfail, Penhold, Red Deer, Carstairs, Didsbury, Canmore and Strathmore.
