OLDS — Nine members of the École Olds High School (ÉOHS) Spartans football team received awards during the team’s annual banquet.
The banquet was held Nov. 14 in the ÉOHS Commons.
“In a sport that is so team-oriented, picking individual awards is always difficult,” Spartan head coach Kent Lorenz wrote in an email. “Teamwork, attitude and leadership are attributes that stand out for the award winners.”
Versatile offensive and defensive player Radek Heppner was named Most Valuable Player.
Quarterback Aiden Knobben was chosen top offensive player and the top defensive player award went to Sam Andrew.
Owen Reimer received the top lineman award.
Nate Reist was chosen as rookie of the year and the most improved player award went to Evan Antle.
Jack Weisbrodt received the Rudy award.
“The Rudy award goes to the player who demonstrates exemplary character, courage, contribution and commitment as a member of the team,” he said.
The unsung hero award was presented to Carson Christensen.
The Josh Crawford award went to Gabe Drent.
“Joshua Crawford was a pivotal member and leader of his team and through football, was foundational in creating a culture around athletics that exists at ÉOHS still to this day," he said.
Spartan football team alumni are raising funds to “honour the memory of Joshua Crawford and are generously donating a monetary grant to a member of the 2024 Spartan Football team that is to be applied to a football camp registration fee in 2024/2025," he said.
