DIDSBURY – A recent months-long investigation led by Didsbury RCMP officers with the assistance of the Airdrie detachment’s Crime Reduction Team and federal units resulted in the seizure of marijuana, cocaine and production equipment from a residence in Carstairs, say officials.

“This search warrant spanned over two days and (resulted in) the arrest of an adult male,” said Staff Sgt. Stephen Browne, who presented the detachment’s quarterly report to council on June 10.

“The male is alleged to have been selling illicit drugs to residents in both Didsbury and Airdrie detachment areas.

“That was a very successful investigation that we brought to a conclusion.”

The Didsbury RCMP detachment report outlined recent police activities in the town and surrounding area from January to March.

Officers conducted 10 investigations under the Mental Health Act, with four individuals apprehended via statement of a peace officer on apprehension or through a physician’s application for apprehension.

Officers also attended numerous public events during the quarter, including visits to local schools and a public town hall meeting involving other detachment officers, he said.

There were 15 person crimes investigated during the quarter, down markedly from 35 in the same period last year.

There were 26 property crimes investigated, including seven frauds, compared with 30 in the same period last year.

There were 64 total criminal code offences reported, compared with 92 in the same quarter in 2024.

One detachment officer was assigned to work at the G-7 conference, he told council.

“He was deployed on Monday (June 9) and I expect him to be deployed for up to two weeks,” he said.

Deputy mayor Curt Engel and Coun. Bill Windsor said they have seen a recent positive and marked increase in police visibility when it comes to traffic enforcement in town.

“I really appreciate seeing the officers,” said Windsor.

Mayor Rhonda Hunter said the recent decline in persons and property crimes in town is encouraging and welcome.

“That’s good for our citizens and our community,” she said.

Council received Browne’s report as information.
