RED DEER COUNTY - A heat warning issued early Wednesday morning largely for communities east of Highway 2 was extended in the afternoon to include Red Deer County and nearby urban centres.

In an updated July 30 weather alert issued at 3:29 p.m., Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a heat warning for Red Deer County near Innisfail, Bowden Penhold, Pine Lake, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

“Daytime high temperatures near 30 degrees Celsius (C)with overnight low temperatures ranging between 14 to 18 (C)are expected through the rest of this week,” the weather alert for the area said.

Heat warnings are issued when two or more consecutive days of daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach 29 C or warmer and nighttime minimum temperatures are expected to fall to 14 C or warmer.

The federal agency said heat warnings are expected to end this weekend as daytime high temperatures return to the mid-20 C range.

Areas already included in the warning from earlier in the day were:

• Kneehill County near Torrington, Wimborne, Three Hills, Trochu, Huxley, Acme, Linden and Carbon; and

• Rocky View County near Irricana, Beiseker, Kathyrn, Chestermere, Dalroy, and Dalemead.

Environment and Climate Change Canada advises residents of and visitors to the warned regions to take the following precautions to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours:

• Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.

• Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.

• Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

• Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.
