Eight Sundre athletes compete at provincial track meet

Sundre High School had earlier this season hosted the zone-qualifying senior track meet

SUNDRE – Eight Sundre High School track and field athletes moved on from zones to represent the community at provincials earlier this month and a couple of them brought home bronze medals.

“This was an exciting and successful year for our track and field athletes,” said McKenzie McElhinney, the school’s athletic director.

Quinn Beecraft Schaafsma placed third in the juvenile pole vault, Riley Boulton placed fourth in the juvenile pole vault, and Haydyn Scott placed third in the intermediate pole vault, said McElhinney.

“Some highlights of the season were bringing home the zone banner – an impressive achievement, especially considering we compete against around 16 other 2A schools in the South Central Zone,” she said, adding SHS also placed fifth out of 60 2A schools at provincials.

Earlier this season, Sundre High School hosted the zone-qualifying senior track meet, which took place May 21 in Calgary. From there, athletes who qualified moved onto provincials, which also take place in Calgary on June 6-7.

“This group has been an absolute delight to work with as a coach, and it’s been a privilege to witness their hard work and accomplishments,” said McElhinney.
