The World Famous Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington east of Olds has had to delay its 2025 opening due to a maple bug and wasp infestation that is threatening displays and the facility's two buildings, officials said in a release issued Monday.
“The safety of the displays, visitors, and community members the museum will be closed while the buildings undergo fumigation procedures,” said museum director Laural Kurta.
The museum was scheduled to open on May 16 but that opening has been pushed back until May 19 to allow for the fumigation work to be completed.
“We understand this delay may be disappointing or inconvenient, and we we sincerely apologize for any disruption it may caused,” said Kurta
“These buildings are rapidly showing their age and are in desperate need of replacement. Unfortunately, we have been unsuccessful in our attempts to secure a new facility to meet our unique needs, and without intervention, we risk losing the museum entirely.”
The fumigation of the facility is the “only feasible strategy, although temporary, to further delay permanent closure,” said Kurta.
The mission of the museum is to “preserve and share the stories of rural Alberta while providing an entertaining and educational experience for all visitors.
“We strive to promote curiosity, creativity, and a sense of humour, fostering a deeper appreciation for rural communities, prairie biodiversity, ecosystems and agriculture.”
The museum features dozens of taxidermies Richardson ground squirrels posed in various town and country-life displays.
