It would be pretty hard to top the way Faith Walton celebrated her birthday — playing badminton on a tropical island.

The Olds High School student turned 16 years old on Jan. 5 while playing at a tournament in Hawaii with the Olds College Broncos.

On her first trip to the Honolulu Open, Walton won a gold medal in the women's C final.

Olds College students Sherry Hahn won silver in open women's singles and Blain Weber won bronze in open men's singles.

Weber and coach Mary Smith won bronze in open mixed doubles.

Walton played opponents of varying ages. Competition was challenging but not overwhelming, she said.

Walton started playing badminton in elementary school. Her grandparents, parents and siblings also play the sport.

"My family is a big badminton family so that was a big influence on me," she said.
