OLDS — The École Olds Spartans are prepping for a game with big implications – a possible provincial playoff berth – when they face the Canmore Wolverines this Saturday in Olds.

Game time is 10 a.m. at Normie Kwong Park.

The Spartans put themselves in possible playoff contention on Oct. 18 when they downed the Mustangs 37-13 in High River.

In the first quarter, the Spartans pinned the Mustangs deep in their own end, forcing a safety and a 2-0 lead.

At the 7:23 mark of the first, the Mustangs got that back and then some when they scored a touchdown. With the convert, they led 7-2.

However, with 2:19 in the first, quarterback Aidan Knobben completed a 15-yard pass to Carson Christensen for a major and with a Connor Haffner conversion, the Spartans took the lead 9-7.

From there, they never looked back.

At the 7:35 mark of the second quarter, Radek Heppner dove into the end zone from two yards out, capping a long Spartan drive. Another Christensen convert made the score 16-7, a score that stood up at the close of the half.

In the third quarter, Knobben threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Heppner. A conversion by Haffner bumped the score to 23-7 for the Spartans.

At the 11:38 mark of the fourth quarter, Knobben hit Christensen with a 27-yard pass for another major. Haffner’s convert was successful, boosting the Spartan lead to 30-7.

At the 7:12 mark of the final quarter, Knobben hit Gabe Drent for a major. Another Connor Haffner convert increased the score to 37-7 for the Spartans.

The Mustangs finally put another major of their own on the board with 4:14 left. However, their convert failed, resulting in a final score of 37-13.
