OLDS — A central Alberta athlete coached by an Olds masters competitor is competing in the Canada Summer Games.
Dayley Reimer is in St. John’s, Newfoundland as a member of Team Alberta.
Reimer, whose hometown is Three Hills, will be competing in the javelin, discus, and shot put at Canada Summer Games.
She threw javelin and took third during an event in mid-July but had to pull out of her other events, due to a sprained ankle. She had to also pull out of competing at the Canadian nationals.
Reimer placed second in the open women’s discus and javelin plus third in shot put during the provincials last month.
She’s not the only area athlete who has been experiencing national-level competition.
Natalie Harrison, who has had a strong summer as well, competed in the Legion Nationals, held Aug. 8-10 in Calgary. It featured the best U16 and U18 athletes in Canada.
From July 18-20, the Western Canada Team Challenge was held in Edmonton.
It was the first team competition for Harrison as a member of Team Alberta.
“A good portion of the meet was plagued by rain, which didn’t help the competition go as well as hoped,” coach Rachel Andres wrote in an email.
Harrison ended up in sixth place shot put and discus as well as ninth in the hammer throw.
Several area throwing athletes competed during the provincials, held July 4-6 in Calgary.
“Jane Concannon, an Olds local who is my newest masters thrower in the 60-64 age category, took third in shot put, second in discus, and second in the javelin throw,” Andres wrote.
Harrison took second place in shot put as well as fifth in discus and the hammer throw.
Reimer finished second in the open women’s discus and javelin as well as third in shot put.
In the U18 category, Jett Rosch took third in shot put and discus.
Stoic Rosch placed fifth in discus in the U16 category.
Natalie Harrison was named to the Alberta Legion team after having a stellar discus performance during the CALTAF Classic, held June 20-22 in Calgary.
Once again, rainy weather was a real factor.
“She got to throw discus on the only day that was somewhat decent which was the 22nd and threw a new personal best of 33.28 metres,” Andres wrote.
