INNISFAIL – Local Mounties captured a wanted man in downtown Innisfail with a little help from staff at the Innisfail Royal Canadian Legion Branch #104.
“The Innisfail RCMP would like to thank the staff at the Innisfail legion with their assistance in apprehending this offender,” said RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff in a media release issued on Sept. 4.
He said Innisfail Mounties had been searching for a high-risk offender who was wanted on outstanding warrants for assault, resisting a police officer, mischief and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
Savinkoff said the suspect had failed to appear in court for his drug trafficking charge on three separate occasions.
He said Innisfail RCMP observed the offender on Aug. 25 walking in downtown Innisfail.
Savinkoff said the wanted man attempted to hide behind a vehicle to avoid detection by police.
Once spotted by Mounties, police said the offender was told he was under arrest for his outstanding warrants.
“The offender attempted to flee the area on foot and was located trying to hide behind the Coffee Cottage restaurant,” said Savinkoff. “As the officer attempted to arrest the offender, he struck the officer numerous times.”
Savinkoff said the offender was able to flee on foot for a second time and ran towards the Royal Canadian Legion with officers in pursuit.
He said the offender entered the building where he was immediately confronted by legion staff and was promptly arrested by police.
Savinkoff said Dakota Caron, 22, a resident of Innisfail, has been additionally charged with assault on a police officer.
He said a judicial Interim release hearing was held and Caron was remanded into custody on his outstanding warrants and his current charge.
Savinkoff said Caron’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 11 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.
