DIDSBURY - Following his recent election victory in the new Ponoka-Didsbury riding, Member of Parliament (MP) Blaine Calkins has been re-appointed to the Conservative Party of Canada shadow cabinet, officials said in a release issued Wednesday.
Calkins, 56, will serve as the party’s shadow minister for hunting, fishing and conservation during the new Parliament session.
Calkins, who served the same role in the last Parliament session, did not immediately return an Albertan call Wednesday seeking comment.
The federal government’s role in hunting, fishing, and conservation includes protecting wildlife, and ensuring compliance with federal regulations, including under the Fisheries Act.
Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, said in the May 21 release that the new shadow cabinet will “work with the government to put an end to unfair American tariffs or to pass good laws, but we will fight hard when the government is wrong.”
William Stevenson, the newly elected MP in the Yellowhead riding which includes Sundre, Carstairs, Cremona and parts of Mountain View County, was not appointed to the shadow cabinet.
“Shuffles in the fall and winter will move more newly-elected MPs into key roles,” said Poilievre.
Shadow cabinet ministers do not receive additional taxpayer compensation for serving in the roles, he noted.
Happy to be reappointed as Shadow Minister for Hunting, Fishing and Conservation.
