MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Northbound traffic on Highway 2 east of Carstairs was delayed for a period Sunday evening due to a vehicle fire.

The province’s travel advisory service, 511 Alberta, alerted travellers at 6:32 p.m. Aug. 31 that northbound traffic on the roadway also known as the Queen Elizabeth II Highway at Highway 581 was closed due to a vehicle fire.

“Crews on scene, use an alternate route,” the travel advisory service advised.

Video and photos posted on social media showed traffic backed up, smoke billowing and in some, what was left of a fire-ravaged vehicle still being attended to by firefighters.

A 6:40 p.m. update by the province's travel advisory service noted one lane had been reopened.

“Expect major delays in the area and consider using an alternate route,” the update said.

At 7:23 p.m., the travel advisory service said the highway had been fully reopened.
