SUNDRE – Support remains strong for a golf tournament that raises funds to open doors for children to access sports.

The eighth edition of the Play 4 Sundre Kidz event, held on Saturday, July 19 at Coyote Creek Golf & RV Resort, had almost 120 participants, said organizer Nicky Vardas.

Despite the weather being all over the place that weekend, everyone got lucky.

“It didn’t rain!” said Vardas.

“It was cloudy and chilly to start, and then in the afternoon the sun came out and warmed everything right up,” she said.

“It was great.”

Aside from ticket sales to play in the golf tournament, there were also some silent auctions as well as a bunch of raffles, she said, adding that about 30 different items were contributed courtesy of all the sponsors and people who donated.

“The Sundre and area people and businesses’ support is unbelievable,” she said.

“It’s always amazing … the support for Play 4 Kids has never wavered.”

In 2024, a total of $18,887 was disbursed among 46 children who were able to access sports and activities including dance, hockey, baseball, as well as taekwondo, she said.

Vardas estimated that somewhere in the ballpark of $15,000 was raised this year.

She praised everyone who remains committed to making the event successful year after year, from the golfers who play to sponsors and donors as well as the team of volunteers who lend a helping hand.

“They make it what it is,” she said. “We just get it ready and they make it happen.”
