Some of our politicians are encouraging talks about separatism because such talks diverts attention away from the numerous problems affecting Alberta.
What happened to all the money in the Heritage Trust Fund since its inception? I’ve been waiting for answers from our finance minister since June 18, 2024.
How much public money has been spent on private schools and on private businesses in the past 20 years? How come our province is not making energy companies pay the taxes they owe to municipalities?
How come mining operations on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies been allowed to proceed despite opposition from a farmers, ranchers, and environmentalists?
How come the province has gone ahead with the establishment of partisan politics in municipal governments despite opposition from local politicians?
How much did the province spend to convince Albertans to switch to a provincial pension despite opposition from most Albertans?
What were the costs associated with the premier’s trips to Trump’s inauguration? To Trump’s mansion in Florida? To her trip PragerU? Why does Alberta lag behind the rest of the country in public school spending (per pupil)?
Why have academic standards gone down hill? Why do diploma exams no longer carry the weight that made our province a leader in academic achievements?
Why has funding for private schools gone up while funding for public schools (percentage wise) have gone down? How come our health care system is in trouble? Isn’t universal health care our right?
How much money has already been spent on establishing a provincial police force despite opposition from the public?
Why does our province allow for the hunting of “endangered species”? What has our premier done to reduce vaccination hesitancy in our province? Are we surprised by the rise of the measles epidemic? Should people be held accountable for spreading measles?
Why did the province disallow photo radar being used by the police in Calgary and Edmonton? If she truly believes in law and order, how come the police are being restrained in enforcing traffic laws?
How come our provincial government is not being open and transparent about providing freedom of information to the public?
Bottom line: Before our premier calls for a referendum on separation, she should first have a referendum on her own leadership. Then she should call for referendums on all the “major issues” concerning our province.
If she truly believes in “direct democracy”, she should put “her money where her mouth is”.
George Thatcher,
