Letter: Reflection needed after Town of Olds' O-NET sale

O-NET may be gone but the people of Olds should reflect about the losses suffered through its demise, says letter writer

Re: Cheers and jeers as Town of Olds' sale of O-NET to Telus finalized

What is vision? It’s the ability to see beyond the immediate. Vision takes sacrifice, dedication, support and cooperation.

If it is to continue it must grow, change, reinvest, trust and expand.

Vision can be destroyed. Usually it is from pettiness, inwardness, jealousy, secrecy or inability to cooperate.

The vision of O-NET didn’t just die; it was destroyed.

O-NET began with a hope that the Town of Olds shared with a group who cared enough to work for the future of their neighbours.

It had the commitment of the council and for years struggled to bring the vision to reality.  When this happened this town had a rare thing – a business whose profits would remain here for the benefit of all.

When O-NET was proposed, I was beyond thankful to think that I was living among people who had enough foresight to propose an enterprise which could support our unknown future needs – sports events, walking paths, rec courts, and most importantly help for our poorer members.

Well Olds, we didn’t succeed. Hopefully the next generation will.

I thank every individual who helped O-NET in any way. Good effort will benefit in the end and you did a good job; otherwise Telus wouldn’t have been interested in O-NET.

O-NET may be gone but the people of Olds should reflect about the losses suffered through its demise.

Movements and ideas need vision. We live together for these reasons and, when you vote, you need to remember that we want councillors who honour past agreements and bring us more than balanced budgets.
