Letter: Disappointing that Carstairs horticultural show cancelled

More people need to be willing to dedicate a few hours of time and some new thinking to keep volunteer-driven community events alive

Re: Letter: Will you miss the Carstairs horticultural show?

In response to a letter about the Carstairs horticulture show, I agree with many of the comments and am disappointed that the show will not likely take place in 2024.

However, as the writer mentioned, time has marched on and it seems that interest in the show is declining.

But the bigger issue for this show and many other events in Carstairs and many other centres, is a severe lack of volunteers willing to step forward.

Whether it is the horticulture show or Beef & Barley Days, these events take a dedicated group of volunteers to put on and we cannot continue to rely on the same small group of volunteers.

The lack of willing volunteers is not a Carstairs phenomenon. Most every volunteer group I know of is struggling with the same issues.

If our communities wish to see such events continue into the future, more people, young and old, need to be willing to dedicate a few hours of time and some new thinking to keep our volunteer-driven community events alive.
