LETTER: Chance to fire Premier Danielle Smith would be welcomed

If Danielle Smith wants to break up Canada, she has to actually give Albertans a vote on this one
opinion

Who do you love, Danielle Smith? It isn't Canada and it certainly isn't Alberta. That’s because the UCP is really just MAGA North with Smith eager to become Governor of the 51st state - Alberta.

When a billboard popped up at Bowden (15 kilometres from where I live) showing Smith together with Donald Trump and the caption, "Hey Danielle, Let's join the U.S.", Smith endorsed this statement by saying nothing. But an angry response from many other Albertans saw that sign removed in less than a week.

Then there is the attempt to force party politics on to Alberta town councils with many Alberta mayors objecting to these authoritarian tactics.

Doctors have been fleeing Alberta for more welcoming provinces with current president of the Alberta Medical Association, Dr. Paul Parks, stating, "It isn't just bad, it's dire."

Then there was the recent $2 million COVID-19 pandemic report, again footed by Alberta taxpayers, which was roundly dismissed by Alberta doctors, including past AMA president Dr. Michelle Warren, who denounced the report as anti-science misinformation.

Dour, endlessly unhappy Danielle Smith has made this clear from January 2024 when she hosted the racist sexist conspiracy theorist Tucker Carlson in Alberta - paid for, of course, by Alberta taxpayers. Then there was the recent Breitbart interview and the meeting with Ben Shapiro who has called Canada a "silly country" that should be annexed by the U.S. without any voting rights for Canadians. What kind of madness is this?

She has been destroying Alberta Health Services much like Trump is currently destroying many U.S. government agencies and trying to get rid of the famously Canadian RCMP in Alberta.

There is also the well-known attempt to replace the proven and reliable Canadian Pension Plan with an Alberta Pension Plan - an unpopular idea which the UCP still have not allowed Albertans to vote on despite promises to that effect.

A frequent contributor to this paper, George Thatcher, has asked the question, Danielle Smith, who do you represent?  With noticeable dissent within the UCP itself; one MLA leaving the party and another fired, I would suggest to you, not many.

If Danielle Smith wants to break up Canada, she has to actually give Albertans a vote on this one.  Many central Albertans, among others, would welcome the opportunity to "fire" Danielle and the UCP.  Sooner rather than later, please.

Daniel McCaffrey,

Olds
