UPDATE: Mountain View, Red Deer counties' alert upgraded to warning as severe thunderstorms tracked

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Environment and Climate Change Canada upgraded its severe thunderstorm watch to a warning for parts of Mountain View County and Red Deer County Monday afternoon.

The affected areas included Mountain View County near Olds and Didsbury and Red Deer County near Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden and Pine Lake.

“At 3:59 p.m. MDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing up to toonie-size hail. Large hail may cause significant damage and injury. Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail,” the 3:59 p.m. May 26 weather alert said.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain.

Other areas of Mountain View County and Red Deer County remained under a severe thunderstorm watch.
