UCP’s Tara Sawyer wins byelection with 61.1 per cent of vote

Four candidates ran in June 23 byelection for the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills riding to replace former UCP MLA Nathan Cooper, who resigned to become the Alberta’s representative in Washington, D.C.

OLDS – UCP candidate Tara Sawyer won the June 23 byelection in the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills riding with 9,363 – or 61.1 per cent of the votes, according to Elections Alberta.

With 100 per cent of polls reporting, NDP candidate Bev Toews garnered 3,061 votes, or 19.9 per cent; Republican Party of Alberta candidate Cam Davies garnered 2,705 votes, or 17.6 per cent; and Wild Rose Loyalty Coalition candidate Bill Tufts garnered 189 votes, or 1.2 per cent.

The results are all unofficial, Elections Alberta expected to post official results on July 3.

“I’m thrilled and I’m humbled by the support that I got from the riding and I’m excited to work on their behalf,” Sawyer told the Albertan.

UCP incumbent Nathan Cooper won the 2023 general election in the riding with 18,228 votes or 75.29 per cent.

Cooper recently resigned to become the province’s representative in Washington, D.C., triggering the June 23 byelection.
