For several weeks, motorists have been instructed to slow down over the rail crossing on Highway 27 near 50th Avenue. A stretch of Highway 27 will be closed Wednesday and Thursday for crossing repairs.

OLDS – Traffic is being diverted around a stretch of the main highway between Olds and places to the west, including Sundre Wednesday and Thursday.

CPKC Rail, Volker Stevin -- which maintains many highways in the province including in central Alberta -- and the Town of Olds are advising that the railway crossing at Highway 27 near 50th Avenue will be closed for railway improvements May 22 - 23 affecting travel on Highway 27.

The closure extends from Highway 27 near 50th Avenue to Highway 2A.

The closure is in effect from 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.

Access for local traffic only will be provided between 49th Avenue and Highway 2A.

Motorists are asked to follow a detour using 50th Avenue, Township Road 331A and Highway 2A.

Volker Stevin is providing all traffic accommodation.

Two message boards installed along Highway 2 will warn large trucks to avoid Highway 27 during the project. Another message board will be installed on Highway 27 west of Highway 22 to warn eastbound trucks of the temporary closure.

The improvement project involves removing the existing section of track at the Highway 27 crossing near 50th Avenue.

That older track will be replaced with a new section of track. Concrete panels will be installed and asphalt aprons will be repaved.
