Second ever Bike For History held in Olds

Participants obtained clues to various businesses in Uptowne Olds with ties to the history of the town

OLDS — The Mountain View Museum & Archives (MVMA) held its second annual Bike For History Scavenger Hunt fundraiser Aug. 23.

MVMA manager & program coordinator Chantal Marchildon says 11 groups (families or couples) participated this year. That's double the number who did so last year.

Participants obtained clues to various businesses in Uptowne Olds with ties to the history of the town. They then had to go out and find all eight participating businesses to receive prizes.

All funds raised go to the Olds Historical Society for programming.

Although the event was billed as the Bike for History, participants could walk or blade if they wish instead.

The Stone family (Michael, Cherilyn and children Ezra, 5 and Cooper, 2) was among the participants. They enjoyed the experience.

One of their stops was Triple R Consignment.

Michael Stone signed the family in and read a history of the place, displayed on a table.

“Maybanks Drug Store used to be here,” it said. “It was owned and operated by Ralph Maybank and his family.

“Ralph was the son of Matthew R. Maybank, one of the founders of Olds. He came in 1906 and started the Olds Drug Co., the first drug store in Olds.

Marchildon says organizers are considering holding the event in mid-September next year, rather than late summer.
