OLDS – Judy Dahl will not seek re-election in this fall’s municipal election.
Dahl, who has served as mayor for 17 years, announced her decision in a letter to the editor issued June 11.
“I find it hard to believe that this chapter of my life has come to an end serving as your mayor and wish to inform you that I will not be seeking re-election,” Dahl wrote.
“The past 17 years have been the greatest honour of my life. Having earned your trust throughout five terms is beyond a gift. I will forever be grateful.
“Public service is not a solo endeavour. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our incredible council members, town staff, community volunteers and most importantly you, the people of Olds community.
“Your passion, resilience and unwavering support have made this town what it is today. It is because of you that we have been able to build a stronger, more vibrant and more connected community through hard times and our success stories.”
Dahl told the Albertan that she simply felt that now was a good time to step away from the role, as she knows there is interest among others to go for the job.
“As I step away from this role, I do so with full confidence in the future of our community we call home. It is important to pass on the torch so that new voices can shape our community’s next chapter,” she wrote.
She also wants to pursue other paths in her life. She likes to write and has been taking some courses.
“This is not goodbye, it is simply a new beginning. I may no longer hold this office; however, I will always be a proud member of this community,” Dahl added.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for awarding me the privilege of serving you.”
