OLDS - The byelection in the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills riding is now a three-way race after the NDP named a candidate Tuesday.

Mountain View County resident Bev Toews is facing off against Conservative candidate Tara Sawyer and Republican Party of Alberta candidate Cameron Davies.

The byelection is being held to replace longtime Conservative MLA Nathan Cooper, who resigned last week to become Alberta’s representative in Washington, D.C.

The Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills riding includes Kneehill County, portions of Mountain View County, as well as the towns of Olds, Carstairs, Didsbury, Three Hills and Trochu.

In a May 27 press release, the NDP said Toews is a longtime educator, community volunteer, and chair of the Fair Trade Olds Committee. She is currently an academic coach and Indigenous education liaison at Ecole Olds High School.

“Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills deserves a representative who understands the challenges rural families are facing and is ready to fight for real solutions,” Toews said in the release.

Candidate nominations for the byelection close on June 5, with advance voting running from June 17 to 21.

The general byelection vote takes place June 23, with the official results being announced July 3.
