TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:
HBC
Hudson's Bay is expected to be back in court Monday, when it will ask a judge to approve a $6-million deal to transfer three of its leases to B.C. mall owner Ruby Liu. The Chinese entrepreneur wants to open a modernized version of a department store in up to 28 former Bay properties she hopes to buy the leases for but some landlords are opposing her plan.
Toronto Tech Week
The inaugural edition of Toronto Tech Week kicks off Monday with more than 300 events happening before it concludes Friday. Speakers will include artificial intelligence pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, Cohere co-founder Aidan Gomez, Netflix’s chief technology officer Elizabeth Stone and Nvidia’s vice-president of AI research Sanja Fidler.
Inflation
Statistics Canada will offer its latest inflation reading when it releases its consumer price index for May on Tuesday. The annual pace of inflation fell to 1.7 per cent in April, driven by lower energy prices with the removal of the consumer carbon price.
Couche-Tard results
Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. will release its financial results for its fourth quarter on Wednesday after the close of trading followed by a conference call with financial analysts on Thursday morning. The Quebec-based company is trying to buy Seven & i Holdings Co., the owner of the 7-Eleven chain.
GDP
Statistics Canada will release its April figures for gross domestic product on Friday. The agency's preliminary estimate for the month suggested the economy grew 0.1 per cent in April, helped by increases in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction, and finance and insurance, partially offset by decreases in manufacturing.
