MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - A Sundre-area teen missed out on advancing to Saturday’s junior steer riding championship during the Calgary Stampede.
Koaltyn Ogilvie, 15, was one of eight competitors in the junior steer riding event which kicked off Thursday, July 10.
Junior steer riding is a competition for contestants aged 12–15.
Ogilvie’s 59-point ride in the first go-around netted him seventh place and $700 in prize money.
In Friday’s performance, he scored a 57, earning him a fifth in the day’s placings and fifth overall.
The placing wasn’t enough to proceed to Saturday though.
The top four – Rex Curtis from Donalda, Alta., Jax Tokelson from Warburg, Alta, Tanner Loring from Riske Creek, B.C., and Cecil Baynton of Maple Creek, Sask. – moved on to Saturday’s championship.
Curtis won the round with a score of 79, bringing his aggregate points total to 225.50 and winnings to $4,000 and winning the championship.
While Loring placed third in the final performance with a score of 74.50, his aggregate points total of 212 and total winnings of $2,500 earned him a second place finish overall.
Thorkelson ended up in third place overall with a points total of 210 and winnings of $1,500. He scored 75 in his third go-around.
Baynton was bucked off during Saturday’s ride and ended up in fourth place overall with total points of 144 and winnings of $1,000.
While Mountain View County’s Ogilvie was competing at the Stampede in junior steer riding, his rodeo success has been in junior bareback. He was crowned the 2024 National Finals Rodeo junior bareback champion although he is not heading back to this year's event which starts Sunday, July 13.
