OLDS — The outdoor season is over for local throwing athletes. They now have a bit of a gap before the indoor season begins on Dec. 8.

Coach and athlete Rachel Andres says the first indoor meet will be held in Calgary, followed by meets in Edmonton.

“I will compete (in) some indoors (events) just to stay in competitive readiness,” Andres wrote in an email. “My indoors is primarily focused on training for outdoors.”

Andres said athletes she and athletes she coaches — Jett Rosch, Jorja Schroeder, Natalie Harrison and Liam Banks — “will compete some indoors as schedules allow.”

The outdoor season ended with the Calgary Track & Field (CALTAF) Throws Fest Finale, held Sept. 28. Andres says her athletes did very well in that meet.

“Natalie Harrison competed in her first throws pentathlon ever and took first place, even with a no mark distance in hammer, so her potential in this event is really good."

She said for the third competition in a row, Rosch obtained a personal best (PB) distance in discus.

“This time he threw 44.39 metres (m), so not as big of a jump as last time, but it was a PB nonetheless for his last time throwing this weight of discus in a competition."

She noted that next year, Rosch moves from throwing  a 1.5 kilogram (k) discus to one that weighs 1.75k.

“Though with his development this year, he’ll probably start his season further than he ended this year."

Andres said in the Calgary season-ending meet, Shroeder “hit a huge PB in hammer throw, taking her old best mark out by four metres (m) with a 34.20m (throw). Four of her six throws were well past her old PB, so she had a fantastic day.”

As for herself, Andres said during that meet in Calgary she had her “second best competition of the year, which says how terrible our weather was during the prime part of the season.

“Usually at this point in the year, the body is tired and throw distances are falling off, so to have my second best throw of the year with a 56.45m was a good way to end the season.”
