Three Olds ball teams win divisions in home tourney

A fourth team, the U11 Spitfires, lost a tight final and ended up in second place

OLDS — Three Olds Spitfires teams won their divisions and another finished second during the fourth annual Spitfires Summer Classic baseball tournament, held June 27-30.

Olds Minor Baseball’s (OMB) U13 Orange, U13 Black and U15 teams all won their divisions, thereby obtaining  “the sought-after tournament championship rings,” OMB president Jeff Clattenburg wrote in an email to the Albertan.

“Our U11 team lost a tight game in the final to finish (in) second place,” he wrote.

Clattenburg described the tournament, held at the Rotary Athletic Park and the OR Hedges park as a “resounding success.”

The tournament was filled to capacity with 42 teams, including U9 community and U9 competitive teams all the way up to U18 AAA.

“Our umpires, many of whom are local youth and parents, received numerous accolades from visiting teams, coaches and parents,” Clattenburg wrote. “I’m proud of how our entire association represented the community of Olds, both on and off the field.”

Clattenburg also heaped praise on the tournament’s many volunteers, who, he noted, pulled off “an astounding 92 games across a four-day tournament weekend.”

“In cooperation with the Town of Olds we had Rotary Athletic Park and OR Hedges diamonds busy and booming all weekend,” he added.
