OLDS — The U15 Olds Stingers lacrosse team won gold during the provincial championship, held July 11-13 in Calgary.

They took on the Taber Thrashers, Sherwood Titans, Calgary Axemen and Vermilion Roar, winning three games and tying one.

They ended up playing the Roar in the final and won 7-4, to bring home gold this time after tying them last time.

It was a heck of a season for the Stingers.

“This year, this team brought home four gold medals, two in tournaments, one league, and one provincial championship,” Olds Minor Lacrosse Association president Joe Berreth wrote to the Albertan in an email.

“This (is) an amazing group of players,” Berreth wrote, adding that “it's not over for some of them just yet.”

Dreshaun Shephard, Josiah Manning, and Samual Young all made the junior Roughnecks U15 team out of Calgary. Also Theoren Gole made the U13 junior Roughnecks team.

As a result, all of these kids will be playing in a junior National Lacrosse League (NLL) tournament Aug. 22-24 in Oakville, Ontario.

“The junior NLL program is one of the premier lacrosse experiences in the country and provides one of the only opportunities for non-professional athletes to play the game of lacrosse using NLL rules,” Berreth’s email said.

“In addition, the junior Roughnecks program is operated as a true player development program, with the junior NLL tournament representing the final experience in the athlete’s development journey.”
