Olds resident nearly wins Men's Open golf tournament

Tim Hollman found himself in a three-way tie with Berkeley Meppem of Calgary and Justin Butt of Airdrie at six-over-par 150 but Meppem won it in a playoff hole

OLDS — An Olds resident nearly won the Olds Golf Club’s Men’s Open, presented by Hildebrand Motors, held July 4-5.

Tim Hollman found himself in a three-way tie with Berkeley Meppem of Calgary and Justin Butt of Airdrie at six-over-par 150.

However, Meppem, who was in first place on the leader board after Day 1, took the Hildebrand trophy after what Olds Golf Club pro/manager Mathew MacDonald called a “clutch par” on the first playoff hole. It was the first time he’d won the trophy.

On the overall low net side, Colton Weseen of Red Deer took top honours, narrowly beating out Ed Duiker of Springbrook, Alta., for the top honors at one-under par (143-1 countback).

A total of 106 players entered the tournament, battling strong winds and some fast greens.
