Deer Meadow School sent six players to the South Central Zone Badminton Championships on May 2 in Banff and Canmore.
Owen Welsh topped the DMS contingent finishing fourth in a pool of 16 in the Grade 8 boys singles competition, finishing the round-robin portion of the tournament second in his pool before moving on to the playoff round and claiming fourth.
“Our top person was Owen Welsh who made it through to the playoffs in boys singles, which is quite tough to do,” said Jeff Clattenburg, a badminton coach at DMS.
Faith Waldren finished fourth in her Grade 7 girls singles division, while the team of Megan Hemeryck and Rachel Land finished sixth in their division of the Grade 7 girls doubles competition.
The team of Derrick Middlestein and Humera Mirza finished fifth in their pool of the Grade 7 mixed doubles.
“The group did really well. We sent a lot of athletes to the zones, which was really fantastic. Once there we did OK,” Clattenburg said.
Meanwhile, the team of Taylor Ormann and Madison Fleming from Olds High School competed in the Grade 9 girls doubles competition, winning one of seven matches they played.
