Residents in many areas of Mountain View County and Red Deer County awoke Monday morning to find snow covering the ground - the first accumulation of the season.

INNISFAIL – A special weather statement issued for Red Deer County and the urban centres near it over the weekend was lifted Monday afternoon.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Sunday, Oct. 20 alert warned of the first accumulating snowfall happening in the area on Monday.

“Snow is expected to begin Monday morning in the Calgary area and along the Highway 2 corridor and move east through the day," the agency said in its Sunday morning statement.

By its noon-hour alert update on Monday, Environment Canada removed areas to the north of Olds including Red Deer up to Ponoka from its alert area.

A few flurries were still expected Monday afternoon in Red Deer County and urban centres near it including Innisfail and Bowden but were expected to end near midnight.

The overnight low is expected to be -13C.
