Highway 2 travellers between Edmonton and Calgary will notice a heavy presence of military vehicles on the roadway for about two weeks starting Thursday as preparations for the 2025 Group of Seven (G7) Leaders’ Summit continue.

The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal grouping of seven of the world’s advanced economies and the European Union. Its members meet annually at the G7 Summit to discuss global economic and geopolitical issues.

In support of the RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG), the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) will be moving a substantial number of military vehicles from Edmonton to Calgary between May 15-30, 2025, for the June 15-17 summit in Kananaskis.

In a release issued Wednesday, police said the route will see the military vehicles travel west on Highway 216 (Anthony Henday), south to Highway 2 (Queen Elizabeth II), west on Highway 201, west on Highway 1 and south on Highway 40.

“To reduce traffic disruptions, these road moves will occur during the evening. We ask all motorists to be careful around these vehicles and to pass with caution,” police said. “For operational security reasons, the ISSG and CAF will not be confirming specific equipment or the number of vehicles involved in these road moves.”

As the G7 is considered a major international event, the RCMP holds the mandate for the overarching safety and security of all world leaders attending.
