Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson has lauded the success of Alberta's 75-year-old Rat Control Program. The program, established in 1950, has kept Alberta free of rodents through a "zero tolerance policy."
“Rats are a worldwide menace that destroy property and spread disease," Sigurdson said. "Alberta has proudly been one of the few jurisdictions on Earth to live without the pest."
Sigurdson said that if an infestation is spotted, it is quick to be eliminated. Further, the Rat Control Program has prevented millions of dollar in damages to homes and farms. Deadly diseases, he said, have also been prevented through the program.
“Our success is a direct result of the proactive measures and hard work from agricultural fieldmen, pest control officers, municipalities in the Rat Control Zone, provincial staff and so many more. Sigurdson stated in a press release.
